FLIGHT AND TOUCHDOWN 1961-1974

In April 1961, the rules for these books changed again. The launching of a Soviet citizen into space followed in May by an American meant there were real spacemen now! These books are almost anti-climactic because imagination had run into reality. No predictions now, they showed what spacemen actually wore, they showed the vehicles and routes they used to get to the Moon. By July 1969, men had landed on the Moon, it became ordinary for children to see men on the Moon. With the last Moon landing in 1972, children's books now wrote of what was beyond landings on the Moon: Moon colonies, space stations, shuttles, and Mars flights.
